The tantalising aroma of freshly baked goods wafted through the air, enveloping Jorissen Place Piazza in Braamfontein on Wednesday, February 28 2024. Curious visitors poured in to show their support at an Entrepreneur’s Day organised by the Khoebo Opportunity Centre, under the auspices of the Department of Economic Development.
Charlton Thangalan, the Manager of the Khoebo Opportunity Centre, says four small business owners showcased their products on this vibrant day. Notably, three of these entrepreneurs were interns from the Department of Economic Development, seizing the opportunity to display their goods and hone their skills.
The array of offerings included delectable scones, biscuits, homemade atchar, boerewors rolls, vetkoek, and clothing items. Remarkably, within just two hours, most products were swept off the stalls.
Refiloe Sentso, who presented clothing items, expresses her excitement about participating in the Entrepreneur’s Day. “This platform is not only a catalyst for business growth but also a phenomenal marketing opportunity,” she enthuses, highlighting the chance to engage with numerous potential customers.
Ntokozo Khumalo, the proprietor of Mtungwa Foods specialising in the making and selling of atchar, relished the exposure the event provided, emphasizing it as “the best exposure” for his business.
Makungu Ntimane, the owner of Mrs Black Bakery, found her freshly baked goods, scones, and biscuits in high demand, selling out quickly and prompting her to start taking orders. Reflecting on the experience, she notes the importance of keeping sufficient stock at hand at all times.
Dineo Sekgoto of Andy’s Traders experienced overwhelming demand for their boerewors rolls and vetkoek. “The exposure is invaluable, and we’re continuously learning,” she remarks, highlighting the educational aspect of participating in such events.
