Kaye Ally: Flying the flag for pride, progress, and acceptance in Africa

For Kaye Ally, Founder of Pride of Africa and Director of Johannesburg Pride, advocacy began almost by accident — but has since become her life’s purpose. “Once I commit to something, I stick with it. Pride of Africa grew out of a need for an organisation that the LGBTQ+ community could truly identify with,” she says.

Fifteen years on, Pride of Africa stands as a leading force for inclusion and human rights on the continent, recognised globally for creating safe, visible spaces for queer Africans.

The 36th edition of Johannesburg Pride takes place on Saturday, 25 October 2025, lighting up Sandton with colour, purpose, and unity under the theme “Purely, Queerly, African”. Ally says: “Johannesburg Pride is the oldest on the continent — 36 years strong. We created Pride of Africa as an umbrella that honours that legacy, ensuring the march remains a platform for activism, human rights, and visibility.”

Under Ally’s leadership, Pride of Africa has expanded its reach through events like the Queer Gala Dinner and initiatives addressing trans rights and transphobia. “Our stance is about liberation — enabling LGBTQ+ people across Africa to live their most authentic lives.”

Ally’s activism is deeply personal. Growing up in the south of Johannesburg in an orthodox Muslim home, she experienced the pain of rejection firsthand. “As a woman of colour and a gay woman, I’ve seen the disregard people show. That’s why creating a space of comfort and acceptance matters to me.”

Inspired by her late mother’s ethics and resilience, Ally remains committed to ensuring Pride stays free and inclusive. Her message for Pride 2025 is simple: “Come march. March for your voice, your visibility, and your right to be seen.”
