JRA Honours Slain Essential Workers With Road Safety Awareness Campaign

As part of the City of Johannesburg’s October Transport Month (OTM2024), the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) held a wreath-laying ceremony and joined the Transport Department to raise awareness of the dangers faced by JRA road workers and urge motorists to be more vigilant and respectful of their safety.

It follows the tragic loss of two JRA workers who were struck by speeding motorists while undertaking road maintenance on the M1 and M2 Motorways earlier this year. Both colleagues sadly succumbed to their injuries, and two suspects connected to the separate incidents have since been arrested.

City of Johannesburg Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport, Cllr Kenny Kunene, and JRA CEO Zweli Nyathi led the road safety campaign, themed “Doing More Together”, along the M2 (East) and Crown Interchange on 28 October 2024.

“JRA regional teams daily commit themselves to delivering road repairs in often high-risk areas, ensuring adequate road safety measures are in place as per the National Road Traffic Act,” said Nyathi. “Irresponsible driver behaviour endangering the lives of our road maintenance workers is unacceptable, and we call on motorists to slow down, obey traffic rules, and safely pass our maintenance teams, or face the consequences.”

Motorists travelling along Main Reef Road intersections and in the M2 vicinity were educated on road rules, traffic circle navigation, road sign adherence, and reporting road lawlessness and other criminal activities.

“Every JRA road maintenance worker deserves to return home safely at the end of each day,” said Cllr Kunene. “By raising awareness of the risks they face and encouraging motorists to be more cautious, we can contribute to safer roads for all.”

JRA urges the public to report reckless driving and other unlawful acts on the road to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) on 011 375 5911 and the South African Police Service (SAPS) on 0860010111.
