Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) hosted senior citizens from Doornkop and Phiri in Soweto and gave them an opportunity to view the Big 5 at the Johannesburg Zoo and enjoy a day filled with fun and laughter. The event was a huge success thanks to the collaboration of JCPZ with Metrobus, which provided transport for the senior citizens, and the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market for the fruit and veggies.

The grannies were delighted to see the animals and nature at the zoo and also participated in a dancing competition between Doornkop and Phiri.
They were treated to fresh fruit and juices throughout the day.
Visiting zoos has many benefits for people of all ages, especially senior citizens.
It allows them to connect with nature and learn about different animals, share these engagements with the young, and reinforce the importance of zoos.
Research has shown that interacting with animals can help lower blood pressure and heart rate, reduce stress levels, and provide a sense of calm.
Zoos also play an important role in conservation efforts by protecting endangered species.
One of the most touching moments of the event was meeting Thokozile Mthembu, a granny who was seeing animals up close for the first time in her life.
She was overjoyed at the sight of the majestic elephant and the mighty lions, and even named one of the lions after her beloved grandchild. Her happiness was contagious.
