The City of Johannesburg hosted the thrilling Spar National Netball Championship finals on Saturday, 7 December 2024, at Ellis Park Arena. The event brought excitement and pride as Johannesburg teams claimed victory in the under-21 and senior categories.
In the under-21 match, Johannesburg A faced Tshwane A in a competitive game. Johannesburg A emerged victorious with a decisive score of 42-32, making history under the guidance of coach Bongiwe Msomi in her first Spar National Championship.
The senior category saw a nail-biting clash between Johannesburg A and Mangaung A. The match was intense and closely contested, with Johannesburg A narrowly defeating Mangaung A by just one point, ending with a final score of 53-52. This victory marked the third consecutive championship win for the Johannesburg Senior A team.
Jane Nwahlengani Mbombi, the chairperson of the Johannesburg Netball Association, shared her pride: “Nothing is greater than winning at home in front of a home crowd. Both the under-21 A and senior A divisions were tough ones, but discipline carried us through.”
Margaret Arnolds, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Finance in the City of Johannesburg, represented Executive Mayor Dada Morero at the event. She presented the medals and trophy to the winning teams, applauding their hard work and dedication.
The atmosphere was electric, with netball enthusiasts cheering their favourite teams. Among them was Phuti Moja, 51, a passionate netball lover, shared her joy at the event. “It’s always exciting to watch these talented players in action. Netball is such a beautiful game, and seeing the teams fight so hard for their victories reminds us why this sport deserves more recognition. The energy and skill on display were inspiring.”
The Spar National Netball Championship finals not only highlighted the talent and determination of South African netball players but also reinforced the City of Johannesburg’s commitment to supporting and promoting sports at all levels.
