The Johannesburg Table Tennis Association (JTTA), in collaboration with the City of Johannesburg’s Sport and Recreation Directorate – Region F Ward 58, recently hosted the Johannesburg Table Tennis Open. Held triennially, the tournament follows the 2023 Table Tennis World Cup staged in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
From 4 to 7 July 2024, the Brixton MPC in Johannesburg buzzed with excitement as the tournament unfolded. The event attracted top South African talent from KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mangaung, Mpumalanga, North West, and Northern Cape.
Spanning four days, the competition featured categories for various age groups, including Under-11s, Under-13s, Under-15s, Under-19s, senior men and women, disabled athletes (SASSA II – Intellectually Impaired and SASSA PD – Physically Impaired), and veterans’ categories (over 40) for both men and women.
In the Senior Table Tennis category, Luke Abrahams from Johannesburg’s Makaabi Table Tennis Club emerged victorious in the men’s division. Denisha Patel, from Anchors Table Tennis Club (also Johannesburg-based), claimed victory in the women’s division. Notably, Patel represented South Africa at the 2023 World Cup.
Lebo Sibiya, a spectator, praised the tournament’s success: “This event has truly showcased South Africa’s remarkable talent. It’s been inspiring to see athletes from across the country come together, not just to compete, but to support and uplift each other. The Johannesburg Table Tennis Open has set a high standard for future competitions, and we are excited about the potential for growth and development in the sport.”
The event was hailed as a resounding success, drawing athletes and coaches from all provinces and effectively bridging the gap between development and competitive play. Building on this momentum, the JTTA, in partnership with the City of Johannesburg, plans to host various clinics. These clinics will serve as platforms for talent identification and provide greater exposure to the sport.
The tournament’s inclusive nature was evident in its targeting of participants from diverse demographic backgrounds and all age groups. Looking ahead, South Africa Table Tennis is set to host an international event in September 2024, in partnership with the City of Johannesburg. This collaboration aims to reinforce Johannesburg’s reputation as a “world-class African city.”
The Johannesburg Table Tennis Open not only highlighted South Africa’s exceptional talent but also demonstrated the power of sport to unite communities and foster development.
