The Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) through the South African Agency of Science and Technology Advancement and in partnership with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo will celebrate National Science Week 2023. National Science Week is an initiative by the Department of Science and Technology aimed at raising awareness of the importance of science in our daily lives.
About 3 000 pupils from schools and communities around Joburg will be encouraged to consider career paths in science and technology. Various science-based activities involving stakeholders, exhibitors, pupils and communities will be run simultaneously around the country. The aim is to demystify science, technology, engineering and maths; and to popularise the love for science to the broader South African society.
It will also serve as a vehicle for showcasing local innovations in science and technology, while making it fun, accessible and interesting for future scientists. Activities will include biomass power generation, hydroelectric energy demonstration, water electricity conductor, converting waste into energy, solar energy demonstration but to name a few.
The theme for 2023 is “Transforming lives through the evidence-based science”.
The first event is today, 1 August 2023, at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, Thomas Bowler Road, Emmarentia from 10:00. The second event is tomorrow at the Johannesburg Zoo, Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkview, third on Thursday, 3 August 2023, at Ivory Regional Park, Jali Street, and the final on Saturday, 5 August 2023, at Diepkloof Xtreme Park, 12257 Immink St, Diepkloof Zone 5.
