Joburg Tourism Company Promotes Destination Joburg at International Travel Expos

The Joburg Tourism Company’s (JTC) Destination Marketing Team has been hard at work this month, promoting Destination Joburg on the global stage. The team participated in two major travel events: the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai and the African Travel Indaba in Durban.

Arabian Travel Market (6 – 9 May)

Held at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), the Arabian Travel Market witnessed a record-breaking edition this year. With 2,300 exhibitors from 165 countries, the event attracted approximately 41,000 visitors. For the first time, JTC showcased Destination Joburg to the vast international audience attending ATI, highlighting the city’s unique offerings and tourism experiences.

African Travel Indaba (14 – 16 May)

The African Travel Indaba (ATI) is a pivotal event for the continent’s inbound and outbound travel industry. After a hiatus due to the pandemic, ATI returned as the first major physical local trade event. The live in-person format allowed JTC to engage with industry stakeholders, reinforcing Joburg’s position as a top travel destination.

Lumka Dlomo, Destination Marketing Manager at JTC, emphasised the importance of the tradeshow: “ATI serves as a recovery platform, enabling us to achieve multiple objectives. We create promotional platforms for the Joburg tourism industry, explore joint marketing partnerships, as well as facilitating distribution channels for tour packages.”

JTC’s Focus at the African Travel Indaba

The JTC team, stationed at Stand L06 in DEC Hall at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli & Durban Exhibition Centre, is focused on the following key areas:

  • Promotion: Showcasing Joburg’s events and tourism offerings to trade partners and consumers.
  • Partnerships: Exploring joint marketing collaborations with travel trade partners to enhance the destination’s visibility abroad.
  • Distribution: Facilitating tour package distribution through intermediaries and wholesalers.

  • Image Building: Creating a positive destination image and elevating Joburg’s profile.
  • Lead Generation: Collecting market leads through meetings for post-exhibition information dissemination.
  • Supporting SMMEs: Cultivating business linkages and opportunities for local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

JTC has extended this opportunity to nine SMMEs, allowing them to participate in the show:

  • Pimville Guesthouse & Tours
  • Soweto Motel
  • Orlando Hotel
  • Sporting Tours SA
  • Sesinqobile Dynamic Tourism
  • Hector Pieterson Memorial
