Joburg Tourism Company celebrates Africa Month with Bassline Afro-Music Festival

As part of its Africa Month celebrations, Joburg Tourism Company (JTC) is thrilled to support the annual Bassline Fest at Constitution Hill on Saturday, 20 May 2023, which also marks the event’s 25th anniversary. The Bassline Fest is billed as “the hottest annual Afro-music festival in Jozi”. It’s a day to have fun, listen to incredible live music, eat scrumptious food from the food trucks and stalls, while shopping at the artisanal arts and crafts market.

JTC’s contribution includes giving market access and business linkages to some 20 SMMEs to participate at the market, while also stimulating job creation for 20 unemployed youth to work at the festival from set-up to breakdown.

“To reposition Joburg as an attractive business and leisure tourism destination, it is critical for the JTC to partner with strategic key role players,” says Councillor Nomoya Mnisi, MMC for Economic Development at the City of Johannesburg.

“By collaborating, partnering and supporting lifestyle and signature events, the JTC seeks to attract a critical mass of business and leisure visitors into the City. This contributes to the development of the tourism sector from grass roots to global scale, as well as to the economy of the City.

“Given tourism’s consumptive complexity in nature, its economic impact is felt widely even in other production sectors and contributes towards achieving the aims of accelerated development.

“The sector compares favourably with other economic activities as a generator of both employment and income, directly and indirectly. It is an important catalyst to encourage the development of the Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME) sector in order to stimulate growth and development of a vibrant second economy,” explains Cllr Mnisi.

“Expect a variety of music and a fun festival for all:  from Amapiano to Indie Rock, Techno Punk, House, Afro Pop and Maskandi driven R&B,” says organiser Brad Holmes.

“It’s going to be the place you and your family want to be!  A selection of top stalls for food, fashion, arts and crafts will be there, in addition to plenty of bars to keep festivalgoers refreshed.  Gates open at 14h00 and The Fest runs from 15h00 – 23h00.”

The line-up reflects the inclusivity, diversity and tolerance that are an integral part of Jozi. The international musical line-up includes headliner Sjava, along with DBN GOGO, Simmy, Afro-futuristic act Afrotronix from Chad/Canada, Techno Punk act Scurru Fitchada from Cape Verde/Portugal, dance hall act Fayazer from Reunion Island, as well as the Planetoids from Germany, featuring SA/Zambian Namauku Star.
