Johannesburg, Tshwane, Sedibeng Ekurhuleni, and the West Rand municipalities shared the spoils of the Gauteng OR Tambo Soncini social cohesion games held at Germiston stadium over the weekend. The event was hosted by the City of Ekurhuleni, with participants coming from across various Gauteng municipalities, including Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng, West Rand, and Tshwane.
Football, Netball, Rugby, Basketball, Athletics, and Swimming were among the seven sporting codes featured in the games.
The City of Joburg’s Sport and Recreation Department organised “Team Joburg,” which included approximately 350 participants.
Cllr Ronald Harris, a member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development, attended the opening event to wish “Team Joburg” luck. Cllr Harris thanked everyone who came out to represent themselves, their families, and the City of Johannesburg.
In his address to the teams, Cllr Harris stated that “sport is a catalyst to change your mind-set. When it comes to your schoolwork, it will help you with discipline, and it can even be a career. There are some big dreams that will come out of this, but most importantly, have fun!”
Morakane Mosupyoe, the MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation, delivered the keynote address. Representatives from the Tambo and Soncini families also attended the event and expressed their support.
A team from Reggio Emilia, Italy, graced the OR Tambo Soncini Social Cohesion Games, accompanied by the Mayor of Luca Vecchi, who shared a message of support for the event.
Tshwane won 39 medals, and Johannesburg 37, while Ekurhuleni took home 31 medals, with Sedibeng bagging 23 medals, and the West Rand clinching 15 medals as the games came to a close. The Italian guests took part but did not compete for medals.
