Joburg Market’s Youth in Agriculture Project Empowers Future Farmers

The Youth in Agriculture initiative, launched in May by the Joburg Market, aims to educate high school pupils across Gauteng about agriculture. As part of this initiative, pupils from Madibane High School in Diepkloof, Soweto, visited Joburg Market for an educational tour. They learned about the types of produce sold at the market, pricing, and market operations, gaining insights beneficial to future farmers and agricultural students.

Additionally, they received booklets detailing agricultural careers, subjects to choose in high school, and relevant higher education courses.
Joburg Market’s marketing team also visited several schools in Soweto to engage with learners interested in farming and horticulture. At Curtis Nkondo School of Specialisation in Emdeni South, enthusiastic Grade 8 and 9 pupils began planting vegetables on school grounds, growing nutritious produce such as carrots, spinach, cabbage, lettuce, and tomatoes after the team’s interaction.
Another school visited by Joburg Market was Aurora Girls High School in Zola North, where the team revitalised an underused garden. They educated Grade 11 and 12 pupils about farming, emphasising the importance of food security.
The Joburg Market is committed to supporting these young students in their subsistence farming efforts, helping to nurture the next generation of agricultural professionals.
By engaging with schools and providing practical knowledge, Joburg Market is not only fostering a love for agriculture among youth but also contributing to the future of food security and sustainable farming practices in Gauteng.
