The Joburg Market took part in the 2025 South African Union of Fresh Produce Market (SAUFM) Conference and Annual General Meeting, held over two days in Benoni. The event brought together key sector stakeholders, including most of South Africa’s fresh produce markets, partner organisations and industry leaders, reaffirming a shared commitment to strengthening the national fresh produce network.
Day one opened with an interactive workshop hosted by Freshmark Systems. The session allowed markets and partners to unpack operational challenges, exchange best practices and explore innovative ways to improve service delivery across the value chain.
Day two drew strong participation, with about 80% of the country’s fresh produce markets represented. Facilitated by Mr Luvuyo Mabombo, the programme centred on the conference theme, “Building a reliable food distribution system in SA”.
SAUFM President Thando Mpulu welcomed delegates and underscored the importance of unity and coordinated sector planning to ensure long-term sustainability. Presentations and panel discussions from various organisations outlined practical steps for enhancing operational efficiency, improving market reliability and building a more integrated national distribution system.
As SAUFM Deputy President and Acting COO of the Joburg Market Charles Park closed the conference with a reflection on the insights shared. He emphasised partnership and accountability, noting: “If we are to build a truly reliable food distribution system, every market must commit to consistency, innovation and collective responsibility.”
The conference concluded with strengthened relationships, renewed collaboration and a shared vision for a more resilient fresh produce sector — one the Joburg Market remains committed to supporting.
