Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda hit a spectacular shot, marking the official commencement of the Joburg Ladies Open tournament at the prestigious Modderfontein Golf Club earlier today, 18 April 2024. This prestigious female golf tournament promises not only glory for its victor but also a collective reward of €300,000 (slightly over R6 million) shared among the winner and those who would have made the cut. Mayor Gwamanda affirmed that the Joburg Ladies Open cements the city’s reputation as a premier sports destination and showcases its capability to host world-class events. “This tournament is not just a display of female golf excellence, but a beacon that will attract investments to our city, witnessed by millions of viewers globally.” He added that he was excited about hosting such a significant event and showcasing the beauty of the city. “Our world-class sporting infrastructure positions us to host major events, boosting our economy, particularly in tourism.”
Mayor Gwamanda commended Bongi Mokaba, the tournament promoter, her team, and all the sponsors and partners, including the Ladies European Tour and Sunshine Ladies Tour, for organising such a spectacular tournament.
Encouraging residents and spectators to flock to the event, Mayor Gwamanda highlighted the Birdies for Dignity initiative, aligning the tournament with the noble cause of “Restoring Dignity for a Girl Child”.
Spar and Dove have pledged to donate dignity sanitary packs for every birdie scored during the tournament adds a poignant layer to the tournament, championing the rights and wellbeing of young girls in the communities.
