Joburg Ladies Open: Incessant Rain Temporary Halts Play

It was a wet and cold day out on the fairways at Modderfontein Golf Club on Friday, 4 April 2025, but the Joburg Ladies Open continued as golfers took on the challenges of the course and the weather until play was suspended at 13:02 due to a waterlogged course.

The suspension is temporary, and more information will be communicated as it becomes available. Itumeleng Mankge, Deputy Director: Events Compliance in the City of Johannesburg and Tournament Promoter, says: “Play has been suspension due to the incessant rain coming down.

​​The course is waterlogged, however, we have not completely suspended play for the day, so we are monitoring the weather. We have someone monitoring it for us throughout. We’re hoping to at least finish 36 holes today. We’ll see how the weather plays out.”

Umbrellas, muddy shoes, and warm jackets were the order of the day, but 132 golfers were tougher than the weather conditions and took on the challenge. The prestigious four-day golf tournament commenced on Thursday, 3 April 2025, and the much-anticipated winner will vie for the title in the final round on Sunday, 6 April 2025, to win their share of the €300 000 (R5.8 million) prize purse.

The event, co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Ladies Tour and the Ladies European Tour, has drawn top female golfers from around the world. It is a key stop on both tours, offering players the chance to earn important points and prize money. With a strong field and a well-prepared course, the competition is heating up. Casandra Alexander, currently the number one on the Sunshine Ladies Tour’s Investec Order of Merit and former Joburg Ladies Open winner are one of the players one field. Chaira Tamburlini 2024 Joburg Ladies Open winner returned to defend her title.

On Tuesday, 1 April 2025, during the Pro-Am prize giving Tshepe Nyambi, Sunshine Tour Tournament Director, said: “Let’s come out in numbers and support the ladies. When it rains out there it blesses the event, and I hope all of you are blessed.”
