Since the C40 Leadership Standards launched in 2021, cities worldwide have made transformative strides in cutting emissions, boosting air quality, and building greener, fairer economies. The City of Johannesburg is no exception—and today, it celebrates its achievement in meeting C40’s rigorous 2024 membership requirements.
Under the leadership of Executive Mayor Dada Morero, the City of Johannesburg has delivered bold climate action aligned with the Paris Agreement, proving its role as a global inspiration for sustainable urban development.
From implementing an emissions-slashing climate plan to prioritising equity and resilience, the City of Johannesburg is driving progress where it matters most.
Using innovative policies and regulatory tools, the City has embedded climate targets into every decision—ensuring its growth is both sustainable and just. This milestone reflects Johannesburg’s unwavering commitment to halving emissions while creating opportunities for all.
Mark Watts, Executive Director of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, applauded the achievement: “We’re thrilled by Johannesburg’s continued leadership in climate action—particularly its focus on inclusive, on-the-ground solutions. As a C40 member, the city is a critical voice in the global fight for fairer, more resilient cities.”
Watts emphasised the unique role of C40 mayors as pioneers: “From delivering science-backed 1.5°C action plans to bridging divides across borders, they’re proving what’s possible when cities unite for the planet.”
Congratulations, Johannesburg—a City leading by example!
