Joburg Film Festival showcases finest from around the world

Gauteng residents have six days to binge watch movies following the return of the popular Joburg Film Festival. The festival, which is in its fifth year, rolled off the screens from 31 January and the credits will stop on 5 February across Gauteng with so much to offer and bringing film lovers to the edge of their seats. The audience will be able to watch some of the finest films from over 35 countries, including 20 African premieres and 27 South African premieres and short films.

In an effort to position Joburg as the country’s cultural capital, attracting the best of the best in the industry to the city, further growing cultural tourism in Johannesburg and the entire country, this year’s festival features films from South Africa, Tunisia, Brazil, Seoul, USA, Japan, Morocco and more, with a mix of feature films and documentaries showcasing stories that cross cultural boundaries.

Tumi Masekela, the Executive Head: Corporate Affairs at MultiChoice SA, says: “We are proud to once again be partnering with the Joburg Film Festival.

Telling stories is part of who we are as an organisation and this partnership will serve as a platform where storytellers come together, and give a renewed light for African storytelling.”

While establishing itself as an independent platform that not only tells authentic stories but showcases and rewards excellence in film, the festival has plenty of authentic and most aspiring films to be screened.

“Film is a powerful platform that enables us to tell our stories, and export them to the world at large, in order to raise awareness and shape conversations to celebrate our successes and bring about change where necessary,” says Mpumi Mabuza, the Acting Chief Marketing Officer at Brand SA.

“We believe that is important to strengthen the film and entertainment industry and shine a spotlight on one of South Africa’s key strengths as a creative hub on the continent through showcasing Africa’s capabilities to produce world class, high quality, and authentic stories from Africa to the world,” she added.
Film lovers are encouraged to book their tickets via Quicket.co.za and alternatively check Joburg Film Festival social media handles for more regular updates.
