​​The City of Johannesburg’s Department of Human Settlements recently hosted a beneficiary education session at Helderkruin Retirement Village in Region C, focusing on the well-being, safety, and dignity of its senior residents.

The session was supported by officials from Emergency Management Services and City Power, who shared practical guidance to help seniors stay safe, plan ahead, and foster harmonious living within their community.

Key advice included the importance of having a valid will stored securely, understanding documents before signing them, and making safe financial transactions through official City channels only. For support, visit the City of Johannesburg Senior Services.

Residents were also reminded of crucial fire and electrical safety practices, such as unplugging appliances when not in use, avoiding overloaded plugs, never leaving candles unattended, and acting quickly if a gas leak is suspected. In addition, seniors were encouraged to maintain their rental properties with care and to remember that permanent alterations to units become City property.

“True security is not only about rules and safety measures — it’s about creating a community of care and respect. By planning wisely and looking out for one another, our seniors are helping to build a stronger, safer Joburg for everyone,” said a Human Settlements official.

The City reaffirmed its commitment to protecting its elderly residents, emphasising that their well-being remains a top priority.
