Joburg drives economic growth through international golf showpiece

The Joburg Open 2023, now in its 17th edition, has evolved beyond its role as a mere international golf event, becoming a dynamic catalyst for economic development, particularly for small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in Johannesburg. The international golf tournament, co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and the DP World Tour, has consistently opened doors for local SMMEs, providing a unique platform for them to showcase their products and infuse a vibrant atmosphere into the event.

At this year’s invite-only Pro-Am on Tuesday, 21 November, a local Black-owned business had the chance to exhibit its finest gin, featuring an array of flavours that tantalised the taste buds of attendees.

Tau Ramorola, the proud owner of ‘Deep Tlakaza,’ expressed gratitude for the opportunity, citing it as a potential game-changer for his small business.

“I am excited for this opportunity and look forward to witnessing the growth of my business and extending our unique flavours to a broader audience. Participating in events like these plays a crucial role in expanding small businesses,” says Ramorola.

Founded in 2022, ‘Deep Tlakaza’ has been making waves locally, primarily at events around Carletonville on Joburg’s West Rand.

The brand pays homage to the rich mining history of Carletonville, with the bottle’s graphics telling a compelling story of its origin.

Ramorola commended the City for its commitment to supporting local entrepreneurs and acknowledged the tournament as not only a marketplace but also a platform for education and inspiration. He emphasised the crucial role such events play in expanding small businesses.

“The exposure and engagement received during the event not only spotlighted my business but also reinforced the importance of the role played by local businesses,” he says.

Bongi Mokaba, the City’s director of events management, says the incorporation of local SMMEs into the Joburg Open is a bold move aligned with the City’s vision for community engagement.

Mokaba adds that the City is committed to building on this foundation, ensuring that the Joburg Open remains a platform for both sporting excellence and community empowerment.

“The Joburg Open is not just about golf; it is a celebration of our community. By providing a platform for these small enterprises to thrive, we contribute to the economic growth of the City and create lasting connections between businesses and our diverse audience,” she says.
