The annual National Metropolitan Police Games kicked off in spectacular fashion as the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Cycling Team emerged victorious in a thrilling showdown against elite counterparts from Durban (DMPD), Tshwane (TMPD), and Ekurhuleni (EMPD).
This year’s event, held at the iconic Cradle of Humankind, saw top officers from across the country compete in a series of high-energy athletic events, further cementing the competitive spirit within South Africa’s metro police departments.
On Monday, 16 September 2024, JMPD’s Thabiso Makhetha, Chris Netshifhefhe, and Zingiswa Mtobela took centre stage, led by their captain, Mogomotsi Mashigo. These elite officers dominated the competition in the 20-kilometre group ride, securing an emphatic victory over their peers from Durban, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni. This dynamic team, supported by teammates Archibald Nemukula and Boitumelo Ngwenya, left no room for doubt as they delivered a stellar performance. Their exceptional teamwork, strength, and precision were evident from start to finish.
In a further demonstration of JMPD’s superiority, Makhetha claimed the coveted first place in the individual time trials, while TMPD’s Thomas Dove and Johannes Holder followed in second and third places, respectively. The team’s prowess in both the individual and group events was a testament to their rigorous training and unyielding determination.
Among the standout competitors was Isabel Moolman from Durban and Mtobela from the JMPD, both of whom played crucial roles in the competition’s first day. The two female officers led their teams to success, securing top positions and further showcasing the strength of women in law enforcement. Their remarkable achievements are a source of pride not only for their departments but for female officers nationwide.
As the games continued back at the Walter Sisulu Sports Complex in Randburg, the atmosphere was electric. Officers from across South Africa’s major metropolitan police departments participated in an array of sporting events, creating an environment brimming with excitement and camaraderie. The event’s lineup included high-stakes matches in Volleyball, Tennis, Soccer, and Netball, as well as equally competitive tournaments in Aerobics, Athletics, and Darts.
The weeklong games aren’t just about fierce competition; they also provide an opportunity for law enforcement officers to connect and engage in friendly rivalry. The lively mood at the complex was palpable as elite officers pushed their limits on the field, all while forming stronger bonds with their colleagues from different regions.
The games span multiple venues, offering a variety of settings for the competitions. Some of the standout locations include the JMPD Shooting Range, the Rock Pool Hall in Braamfontein, and the pristine Jackal Creek Golf Estate. In addition to these venues, the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve provides the perfect backdrop for several outdoor events, adding a unique dimension to this already prestigious competition. The diversity of venues showcases the versatility of the participating officers, who not only excelled in physical challenges but also adapted to different environments with ease.
Looking ahead to the remainder of the competition, the JMPD Cycling Team is set to tackle two of the most demanding challenges of the games. On Tuesday, 17 September 2024, the team will return to Muldersdrift for the gruelling 4km Hill Climbing event, where they will once again face fierce competition from their counterparts. The following day, on Wednesday, 18 September 2024, the cyclists will embark on a challenging 50-kilometre ride around the Cradle of Humankind to bring the competition to a thrilling conclusion.
These upcoming events will test the physical endurance and mental fortitude of all competitors, as they strive to leave their mark on the National Metropolitan Police Games. Given their strong start, the JMPD team is confident in their ability to maintain their lead and bring home more victories.
During the opening ceremony of the games, the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku emphasised that physical fitness is a crucial element of effective law enforcement.
“We don’t always have to chase criminals to enforce the law. Sometimes, as law enforcement officers, we need social events like these to allow our members to unwind and forget about their daily traumatic stresses.”
His words struck a chord with the audience, underscoring the importance of maintaining not only physical fitness but also mental well-being among officers. By participating in these games, officers are afforded a much-needed break from their demanding duties, giving them a chance to recharge while still engaging in healthy competition.
As a testament to the community-focused nature of the event, members of the public have been encouraged to attend and support their local officers. Spectators are welcome at the various venues, where they can cheer on their favourite teams and enjoy the lively sporting atmosphere. The JMPD Sports Coordinator, Quinton Jaftha (061 413 8599), is available to provide further details for those wishing to watch the games in person.
The National Metropolitan Police Games have long been a tradition of athletic excellence within South Africa’s law enforcement community. The competition allows officers to showcase their athletic abilities while simultaneously promoting physical fitness and mental wellness.
