JMPD to host national Metropolitan Police Games amid fierce multi-sport rivalry

The City of Johannesburg is gearing up to host the prestigious national Metropolitan Police Games, scheduled from Sunday, 15 September to Thursday, 19 September 2024. This annual event is set to bring together elite officers from four metropolitan police departments across South Africa for a week of intense, high-energy competition.

The opening ceremony and registration will take place at the renowned Walter Sisulu Sports Complex in Praegville, Randburg, marking the beginning of what promises to be an exhilarating showcase of skill, teamwork, and athleticism.

This year’s games will see elite officers from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) compete alongside their peers from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD), and Durban Metropolitan Police Department (DMPD). Each department has enlisted approximately 183 athletes who will compete in a variety of sporting codes, with the aim of securing bragging rights as the top metropolitan police force in South Africa.

According to Superintendent Xolani Fihla, spokesperson for the JMPD, the competition promises to bring together some of the most physically fit and athletically gifted officers from across the country.

“For law enforcement officers more accustomed to patrolling the streets and maintaining public safety, these games provide a unique opportunity to trade their uniforms for sporting gear, participating in a range of competitive events designed to assess both mental and physical stamina,” says Fihla.

The games will feature an extensive list of sporting codes, providing ample opportunities for both male and female officers to demonstrate their prowess. Events on the roster include Soccer, Netball, Cycling, Athletics, a Fun Walk, Volleyball, Tennis, Aerobics, Hiking, Golf, Shooting, Pool, and Darts.

As always, soccer and netball remain among the most highly anticipated competitions, with officers showcasing their speed, agility, and tactical skills on the field and court. However, a full slate of sporting codes ensures that there is something for every participant, from the precision of shooting to the stamina required for long-distance running.

Superintendent Fihla emphasises that all sporting codes and participants are actively involved, and everyone is focused on achieving success.

“The games are expected to deliver a level of competitiveness rarely seen in such diverse athletic competitions, with each department striving to secure medals, trophies, and the highly coveted honour of being named South Africa’s top Metropolitan Police division,” he says.

Johannesburg will serve as the perfect backdrop for the games, with events taking place at various world-class venues across the City. The Walter Sisulu Sports Complex will serve as the primary hub, hosting most events, but other locations across the Johannesburg Metro will also be integral to the games. Some of the key venues include the JMPD Shooting Range – home to the shooting events; Rock Pool Hall in Braamfontein – where pool will be contested; Jackal Creek Golf Estate – the venue for golf enthusiasts; Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve – a fitting location for the hiking events and the Cradle of Humankind – offering a scenic route for cycling events.

The Sports and Recreation Directorate within the Community Development Department of the City has played a vital role in securing these venues, ensuring that each one is ideally suited for its respective sporting code. “This collaboration has not only ensured access to top-quality facilities but also supported the smooth execution of the games,” Fihla adds.

He says in addition to the athletes competing, spectators are strongly encouraged to attend the games and cheer for their favourite teams. “Everyone is welcome to watch the games and support their favourite Metropolitan Police outfit.”

The Joint Operations Centre (JOC) has been instrumental in developing safety protocols, ensuring that both participants and supporters can enjoy the games in a secure and well-organised environment.

This year’s National Metropolitan Police Games will not only deliver exciting competition but will also strengthen the bonds between officers, contributing to enhanced physical fitness and improved team cohesion across the departments.

While these games serve as a platform for competition, they also offer an opportunity to highlight the strength and unity that underpin the country’s law enforcement agencies.

“With each passing year, the level of competition has increased, reflecting the dedication of the officers involved and the importance placed on fitness within the policing community.”

The success of the 2024 games will likely further cement the event’s reputation, drawing attention from the public and media alike. Joburg’s role as host City positions it at the forefront of this prestigious event, reflecting its commitment to supporting both the sporting and security sectors.

“By providing a platform for officers to showcase their abilities outside the realm of traditional policing, the Metro Police Games highlight the holistic nature of law enforcement, where fitness, discipline, and teamwork are as essential as the day-to-day duties officers perform in their communities,” Fihla explains.
