Ivory Park set for R43 million swimming pool complex

The Department of Community Development in the City of Joburg appointed Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) to build a R43 million swimming pool in Ivory Park. The Ivory Park Swimming Pool Complex is multifunctional and will unearth future international Olympic champions by offering swimming lessons and a safe environment for the residents.

Community Development, which includes sport and recreation will provide a space for competitive swimming enthusiasts and learning to contribute positively to the well-being of the youth and the community at large.
July is the start of the financial year for the City of Joburg. The JDA continues to facilitate infrastructure developments for the City of Johannesburg and looks forward to the completion of the Ivory Park Swimming Pool Complex.
This facility will add to the City’s over 50 swimming pools spread across all seven regions and benefit the community of Ivory Park, Kaalfontein and adjacent neighbourhoods. Located in Ward 111 on Freedom Drive, the Ivory Park Swimming Pool Complex will have an Olympic-style swimming pool and splash pool with a grandstand for spectators during competitions.
The facility will use technological innovations such as solar panels (for water heating), water tanks (for water harvesting), greywater recycling and a waterless toilets system that utilises a natural biological process to dispose of waste.
The scope of work for the implementation of the facility includes:
• Earthworks,
• Parking Layout,
• Pump Room,
• Main Swimming Pool,
• Kids Swimming Pool,
• Staff Quarters, Guardhouse,
• Change rooms and offices,
• Boundary Wall,
• Stormwater management,
• Bulk services connections,
• Attenuation pond and Pavilion
“Community Development is a key custodian of social cohesion and plays a critical role in uniting communities as well as contributing to a quality life. The pool complex will offer a range of uses and choices to people who live, play, learn, share, socialise and visit it,” said Cllr Ronald Harris, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg.
The Ivory Park Swimming Pool Complex will supplement the various developments that have been taking place in Region A, including the ongoing Kaalfontein Multipurpose Centre, Ivory Park Public Environment Upgrades and Kaalfontein Clinic.
“The completion of the Ivory Park Swimming Pool will be another example of the JDA applying its principle of creating great spaces and robust democratic public spaces that give dignity and choice to city users.
“This project also aligns with the JDA’s objective to deliver sustainable social and economic infrastructure projects efficiently, effectively, and economically,” said Cllr Belinda Echeozonjoku, the City’s MMC for Development Planning.
This project epitomises what a good collaboration between the different departments and entities in the City can produce.
