Soweto recently buzzed with ludo players at the Africa Ludo Cup of Nations 2021. The event took place at the Phefeni Recreation Centre and Kopanong Hall in Dobsonville, Soweto.
Uganda Ludo Federation scoop the gold, Ludo South Africa took silver and Ludo Ivory Coast and Othello Federation followed with bronze.
The successful tournament was a clear indication of all the hard work and many years of endless commitment of women and men behind Ludo South Africa with the support of the Africa Ludo Federation (ALF).
Joe Setladi, the President of Ludo South Africa, said: “We are excited to be staging a tournament of this nature for the first time. It has been an amazing learning curve for us. We are happy and looking forward to expanding this wonderful board game.
“There are numerous formats followed to play the games and we are excited that the format we use is played in other countries which are part of the 10 Africa member states in the ALF.”
In terms of ludo development, Setladi said: “The development programme is going quite well. The current school programme for primary and high schools is called Ludo for School. The out of school age qualifies for a league group. We are looking forward to expanding our programme and opening leagues in Gauteng.”
The school ludo programme is among the pillars of the ALF and when well implemented has a capacity to improve the current status of mathematics.
Ourenga Jeannot, a professional maths teacher who is also the President of Ludo Côte d’Ivoire, said in his county they have established a Ludo School programme. “The programme is working brilliantly as children are able to transfer learned skills to get good maths results,” he said.
