In pictures: Joburg Zoo shines as Festival of Lights returns

Joburg Theatre’s annual Festival of Lights officially launched on Saturday, 29 November 2025, and once again it is lighting up the City with magic, colour and festive cheer this holiday season.

Stepping inside feels like entering an enchanted wonderland. Everywhere you look, the glow of twinkling bulbs and shimmering structures wrap the night in a warm and joyful atmosphere. The life-sized illuminated animals steal the show, drawing crowds who pause to admire them and take photos.

The towering giraffe, the majestic reindeer and oversized teddy bear quickly become favourites, standing as gentle giants that light up pathways. Every corner sparkles as visitors wander through winding trials, and each step reveals a new burst of colour or flicker of light that adds enchantment. Live Christmas music and jingles drifts through the air and fills the atmosphere with festive rhythms while dancers and performers brighten the evening with energy. Food vendors and market stalls tempt the senses with warm treats, savoury snacks and sweet holiday delights.

Melanie Brown attended the event with her family and says she never misses the festival. “For us this is a family tradition. The children enjoy the rides in the amusement section and all the big lights. Now it finally feels like the holiday season.”

The festival is an experience for the entire family. The amusement section, complete with joyrides suitable for both children and adults, guarantees laughter and memorable moments. Whether you’re there for the lights, entertainment or simply the holiday spirit, the Festival of Lights promises a magical night out in the City of Johannesburg.
