The installation of a 30m-high water tank is Alexandra Township’s newest landmark, as the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), on behalf of the City of Johannesburg, continues with the construction of the Alexandra Hospice and Rehabilitation Centre.

The construction of the new modernised Alexandra Hospice and Rehabilitation Centre began in March 2020 and, since construction activities recommenced after the national lockdown restrictions were lifted last year, the foundation for what will be the new state-of-the-art hospice can be seen taking shape in Alexandra, Region E, north-east of Johannesburg.

The scope of works of this project entails the construction of a 48‐bed and 12‐ward facility, which will also have a dining hall and recreational areas located on the ground floor of the building. A water tower, retaining wall, site reticulation and concrete foundations are just some of completed works that have taken place.

Presently, the Alexandra hospice is the only facility of its kind in the township, and has been operating from an old, deteriorating school building, which needs much care. The upgraded facility will be at a new location, at the corner of Lenin Drive and Far East Bank streets.

The new location means that the hospice will be ideally located for residents and visitors. It will benefit the community by improving and expanding patient access to medical services and improving the health of residents.

The facility will also have professional consultation rooms, located on the ground floor, and administration offices, which will be on the first floor. There will also be a hospice services store and a waste collection area. A backup generator and water tank tower for both portable and fire water, will always ensure optimal functionality.

A garden and wall of remembrance, 16 dedicated parking spaces and a drop off bay, guard house and boom gate access will also be developed as part of this project.
