The Lenasia Public Transport facility was in the spotlight during the Golden Connection Mayoral Tour in Region G recently. The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Mpho Phalatse, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Development PlanningCllr Belinda Echeozonjoku and Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mokgema Mongane conducted the walkabout of Lenasia Public Transport facility.

The scope of work for the upgrade of the facility included the following:
- Extension and upgrade of steel canopy structure with column bases

- Paving and provision of new non-motorised transport sidewalks
- Asphalt overlays
- Stormwater drainage
- Sewer pipes
- Hawker stalls
- Improved Lighting
- Landscaping
- Fencing for ablution facilities
- Street furniture such as tables, benches, and bollards
The project has created employment opportunities for the community. A total of nine local SMMEs and 20 local labourers were on the project. The expenditure amount exceeds R 2.3 million.
“We conducted an oversight tour of the Lenasia Public Transport Facility. The facility was supposed to have been operating. However, the taxi association made requests before operating the facility,” said Cllr Belinda Echeozonjoku, the Member of the Mayoral Co for Development Planning, said.
“I am happy that the concerns by the taxi association to the Executive Mayor, the JDA CEO and myself and that the JDA has agreed to finalise the completion of this facility within two months, since it’s already at 99% completion. Then it can be handed over to the Dept of Transport,” she said.
