Future-oriented Matholesville youth psyched to exploit business prospects

Young people should reconsider their reliance on formal education in favour of developing hard skills. These were the sentiments of National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) Outreach Officer Patrick Sibeko during an information sharing session hosted by the Department of Economic Development in Matholesville Hostel, Roodepoort. The session was designed to equip the youth of Ward 127 with the necessary information and tools on how to use the resources provided by the department and stakeholders to their advantage.

Sibeko presented the different programmes the agency offers to alleviate youth unemployment.

“It is already difficult for qualified people to get into the job market; therefore, learning other skills and professionalising your existing idea is an avenue to be explored,” he said.

The event is an ongoing initiative of the department, and the young people in attendance engaged actively as most already had business ideas, some were already skilled, and others were looking for funding.

Katlego Nawane, skilled in painting and installing ceilings, said a lack of knowledge continues to contribute towards unemployment.

“Some young people are unskilled because they don’t have the right information. So, sessions like these are important to spread awareness on opportunities available,” said Nawane.

According to Yvonne Tshweu from the DED, beyond upskilling the youth, the department also offers guidance.

“Our aim is not only to skill people but to also point you in the right direction, whether it’s for job placement, business registration, or even funding,” Tshweu explained.

Young people who attended the session pleaded with funding agencies to broaden their scope in terms of the kinds of business ventures they support so that more young people can be accommodated.
