From Informal to Inspirational: Jabavu Extension 6 Ushers in a New Era

The City of Johannesburg’s Department of Human Settlements is bringing its vision to life with the Jabavu Extension 6 Mixed-Use Development in Soweto. This ambitious project is more than bricks and mortar—it’s about restoring dignity and creating safe, vibrant communities for our residents.

To mark the start of this development, the Executive Mayor, Cllr Dada Morero; MMC for Human Settlements, Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso; MMC for Economic Development, Cllr Nomoya Mnisi, attended the sod-turning event alongside the Acting Director for Human Settlements, Oupa Nkoane, and the Chairperson of the Section 79 Committee, Cllr Michael Mpolobosho.

At the heart of this development is homeownership, with the completed development yielding 1591 units. Phase 1 will deliver 768 fully subsidized RDP units, prioritising families from the Homemakers informal settlement, military veterans, and other qualifying beneficiaries.

For the First Home Finance programme (formerly known as FLISP), 439 units are available, and 382 units will be for Social Housing (rentals). These modern four-storey walk-up units will provide secure, quality housing—an essential step toward breaking the cycle of poverty and instability.

The precinct will feature a redeveloped sports stadium, a youth centre, and a memorial garden honouring the area’s rich history. Retail spaces and social amenities will bring economic opportunities closer to home, while integrated urban design ensures a connected, inclusive neighbourhood.

“This project reflects our unwavering commitment to human dignity. By creating safe spaces and promoting homeownership, we are not just building houses—we are building futures. For the families who will soon call Jabavu home, this development means security, pride, and the promise of a better tomorrow,” said Cllr Mabaso.
