In just a few hours, South Africans will take to the polls to cast their votes in the national government elections on Wednesday, 29 May 2024 between 7am and 9pm. According to voter registration statistics on the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) website, as of Tuesday, 28 May 2024, the total number of registered voters in Johannesburg stands at 2 345 333. Of this, most females are registered to vote, amounting to a total of 1 241 758 and a total of 1 103 575 males registered to vote in the City.

Meanwhile, special voting took place on Monday, May 27 May, and Tuesday 28 May.
In a media statement, the IEC says a total of 1 668 076 South Africans have been approved for special votes. “Of these, a total of 624,593 voters will be visited by trained election officers at their homes or places of confinement. We are encouraged by the number of special votes received and that South Africans are enthused for this general election,” reads the media statement.
Here are a few important things to note:
• Voting hours are between 7am and 9pm.
• Vote where you’re registered.
• Take your green South African identification book or smart card with you.
• There will be three ballot papers.
Ballot 1: The National Ballot will be used to vote for political parties. There are currently 52 parties on this ballot, and the configuration will be a dual column.
Ballot 2: The regional and national ballots will have political parties and independent candidates contesting for the seats reserved for each province in the National Assembly. Voters will use this ballot to elect a political party or an independent candidate to represent them in the National Assembly.
Ballot 3: The Provincial Ballot is unique to each province and includes parties and independent candidates competing for seats in each respective provincial legislature. This ballot will allow voters to choose either a political party or an independent candidate to represent them in provincial legislatures.
