Fierce competition as former champs return for €1.5 million Joburg Open purse

A record-breaking nine former Joburg Open champions have made a triumphant return to the 17th annual international gold tournament, promising an unparalleled display of golfing prowess. The stakes are higher than ever, with a remarkable prize purse of 1.5 million euros (equivalent to R20.5 million) up for grabs.

The list of returning champions reads like a who’s who of golfing excellence. Dan Bradbury, the reigning 2022 champion, is gearing up to defend his title. The 2021 victor, Thriston Lawrence, adds South African flair to the competition alongside Charl Schwartzel (2010 and 2011).

Joachim B. Hansen (2020), Shubhankar Sharma (2017), Darren Fichardt (2017), Haydn Porteous (2016), Andy Sullivan (2015), and Branden Grace (2012) complete this star-studded ensemble.

Bongi Mokaba, the City’s director of events management, anticipates fierce competition, which will set the stage for an unforgettable tournament.

“The 17th annual Joburg Open International Golf Tournament is poised to make history with a record number of former champions converging for a golfing extravaganza,” Mokaba says, adding that each player brings a unique blend of skill and experience to the greens.

She notes the historical dominance of South African players in the Joburg Open. Branden Grace, in particular, etched his name in the annals of European Tour history by winning his first four European titles in the same year, commencing with his triumph at the Joburg Open in 2012.

The competitive tournament is set to unfold on the picturesque lawns of the Houghton Golf Club, providing a scenic backdrop for the players and spectators alike. This renowned venue adds an extra layer of prestige to an already esteemed event.

“The lush greens of Houghton Golf Club will witness a fierce battle for the coveted title, making this edition an unmissable event for golf enthusiasts worldwide,” says Mokaba.

As a co-sanctioned event by the international Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour, the Joburg Open attracts a global roster of over 130 golfers. The international collaboration elevates the competition, making it a coveted experience for both local and international players.

The Executive Mayor, Cllr. Kabelo Gwamanda, will officially inaugurate the tournament with a ceremonial tee-off on Thursday, November 23. His presence adds a touch of civic importance to the sporting event.

During the sponsor’s welcoming gala, Cllr. Gwamanda extended his best wishes to all participating golfers.

His encouragement resonated with a sense of community support, urging Joburgers to take pride in the event and witness the spectacle firsthand.
