Empowering Women Through Volleyball: Celebrating Sisterhood in Sport

The City of Joburg’s Sport and Recreation Directorate, in partnership with the Gauteng Provincial Government and KAD Volleyball Club, hosted an exciting women’s volleyball event to celebrate Women’s Month at Danie van Zyl Recreation Centre.

KAD Volleyball Club emerged victorious, clinching first place, followed by Delfos Volleyball Club in second, and Diggers Volleyball Club taking third. The fast-paced match between KAD VC and Delfos VC kept everyone on the edge of their seats.

The intensity of each game was unmatched, with players diving across the court, chasing every point with relentless energy and passion. The powerful spikes, precise sets, and breathtaking blocks were thrilling to watch. The event wasn’t just about competition, but also about sisterhood and celebrating the role of women in sports.

Nalini Pillay, a dedicated player for Delfos VC, shared her love for the sport, saying: “I play volleyball for the love of it. These games bring women together.” She highlighted that the event was about more than just volleyball — it was about supporting and empowering women.

“It’s about us, staying fit, and having fun. It’s also an opportunity to raise awareness on women’s issues like health and wellness, and companies have come to offer health assessments and discuss important topics that affect women.”

Ryna Williams, a key figure in organising the event from the Gauteng Provincial Government, remarked: “Today’s volleyball at Danie van Zyl Recreation Centre is all about women. It’s part of celebrating Women’s Month and working with the City of Johannesburg and KAD VC is always a pleasure. We bring women from various volleyball clubs together to compete and bond.”

The event underscored the power of sport to unite, uplift, and strengthen women, proving that volleyball is not just a game but a platform for women to support each other both on and off the court. As the match concluded, it was clear that the real victory lay in the empowerment and joy shared among the women who came together to celebrate their strength, fitness, and community,” said Stella Manamela, Facility Manager at Danie van Zyl Recreation Centre.
