In celebration of physiotherapy week, City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Service and the Johannesburg Metropolitan District Rehabilitation exposed emergency responders to new techniques to support their work fitness at Florida Fire Station this week. They provided emergency responders with the tools and techniques for prevention of injuries in various work settings. Participants engaged in fun activities and fitness challenges to emphasise the importance of maintaining good physical health.

Jocelin Flank, the Manager for Occupational Health and Safety, said the wellness day was also aimed at boosting the employees’ morale by taking them out of the office given the demanding work environment they operate in.
He said prioritising the physical and mental wellbeing of these heroes not only demonstrates appreciation for their service but also ensures they are better equipped to continue saving lives.
Physiotherapists from Johannesburg Metropolitan District Rehabilitations discussed proper ergonomics, including how to set up their workstations and perform tasks in a way that minimises strain and discomfort.
“This initiative is a part of annual celebration of physiotherapy week raising awareness around the importance of movement and body posture helping individuals in restoring, reviving, and renewing mobility and strength,” said Sachia Adam, a Physiotherapy at Joburg Metropolitan District Rehabilitation.
In addition to physical activities and ergonomics, nutrition experts provided advice on maintaining a healthy diet and monitoring vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate and blood sugar levels.
Mswazi Hlatshwayo, a Fire Fighter stationed at Rosebank Fire Station, expressed his appreciation. He said he found the event impactful, valuable and eye opening.
“This event made me realise that we’re not just colleagues, we’re a family. It’s a reminder that we’re all in this together, and taking care of ourselves is just as crucial as taking care of others. I hope to implement the techniques learned during the presentation and demonstration to improve my wellbeing,” said Hlatshwayo.
