For more than two decades, Chris Bruyn, Region F Depot Manager at the Joburg Roads Agency (JRA), has been at the forefront of improving Johannesburg’s traffic management systems. He oversees the maintenance of traffic signals, markings, and infrastructure across all regions of the city — a role that blends technical skill with leadership and dedication.
Bruyn began his career in 2001 as the youngest recruit at the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) before joining the newly formed JRA later that year. A qualified Electrical Engineer, his innovative approach to workflow management revolutionised how the agency maintains traffic signals. By dividing Johannesburg into smaller routes and assigning technicians to each area, productivity increased by over 300%, ensuring faster and more reliable service delivery.
His leadership has also guided the JRA through challenges. Around 50% of traffic signal faults result from power issues linked to Eskom and City Power, compounded by vandalism and theft that have caused damages of up to R22 million. Despite these hurdles, Bruyn remains committed to solutions that strengthen the city’s road network and enhance public service.
Under his direction, the JRA is implementing a new operational structure with 24 multidisciplinary teams — each consisting of a technician, electrician, and general worker — to better respond to service demands.
As Bruyn nears retirement, he reflects on his journey with pride. Beyond his technical contributions, he values the teamwork, growth, and mentorship that have defined his career. “Find something that you love to do,” he says, “and you will never work a day in your life”.
