Don’t miss must-see shows at Joburg Theatres this festive season

As the holiday season approaches, Joburg City Theatres are ready for a month filled with entertainment and celebrations. From comedy acts to soul-stirring jazz, and a captivating ballet performance, there is something for everyone to have a lekker December. Theater goers can expect loads of entertainment as they experience performances from the 01 December 2023 to end the year on a high note.

Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema, the CEO of Joburg City Theatres, says they plan to usher in the festive season with a line-up of shows that reflect on the riches of the arts. She says these performances are not just entertainment but a celebration of culture, diversity, and community.

“We look forward to welcoming theatergoers to our venues, creating magical moments that will be cherished long after the curtain falls,” says Nduneni-Ngema.

The must-see theatre show, “Westside Comedy Jam”, starts at the Roodepoort Theatre from 01 December 2023. It will bring an evening full of banter, laughter, and unforgettable moments with Tebogo Ntlhane and other comedians on the line-up promising a night packed with nothing but excitement. 

Ready to take on the Blue Theatre Stage at the Soweto Theatre on 03 December 2023 is a multi-talented South African Thamsanqa Majela with a well-choreographed dance piece “Don’t let The Sun Set on You Here”, which offers the audience a glimpse into geopolitical, racial and clamatorial issues that keep the world under pressure. 

In the second week of December, the spotlight will be on Dr Nduduzo Makhathini as he takes centre stage at Lesedi Theatre (Joburg Theatre) with a mesmerizing jazz concert on from 09 to 10 December 2023. 

Cultural practitioner, singer and song writer Mbuso Khoza will join him as they explore the concept of divination and blending jazz with Nguni prophetic traditions. This musical show is the perfect spectacle for jazz lovers to be at and experience a night filled with electrifying performances with a touch of traditional roots.

The Youth Russian Ballet Company will welcome the holiday season with its stunning performance of the timeless classic “The Nutcracker” and keep the audience on their feet at the Roodepoort Theatre from 15 December to 16 December 2023. The fun and magical ballet show composed of pupils and professional dancers promises to charm the heart and create everlasting memories for all audience of all ages.

Closing the festive line-up is the “Soweto in Colours Countdown to 2024”, an annual year-end event at the Soweto Theatre that provides a safe space for the community to celebrate the year’s end and welcome the new one. 

Hosted by Lungile Masondo and Pele-Pele Mchunu, the event will feature 12 top DJs, JoziI FM broadcast team, lifestyle exhibitions, kasi food stalls, a cocktail lounge, and a beer garden.
