Dinah Chases Her Dreams One Page at a Time

Dinah Billings (54), a General Worker at Yeoville Library, is a true inspiration. A wife, mother, dedicated employee, and trusted confidante, she recently added a well-deserved title to her list: qualified graduate.

Dinah joined the City of Johannesburg in 2016. Encouraged by her supportive supervisor and the City’s educational benefits scheme, she took the plunge and returned to education after dropping out. Through the Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) programme, she earned her matric certificate. Her thirst for knowledge didn’t stop there. She went on to achieve a Higher Certificate in Archived Records Management and finally, her BA degree in Information Science from Unisa. The graduation ceremony was a momentous occasion for her.

The City’s Sub-ed scheme played a vital role in making her dream a reality. Dinah acknowledges the challenges of returning to education after such a long break. “The curriculum had changed and being out of school for over 20 years took its toll,” she admits. “There were times I nearly gave up.”

Thankfully, her daughter was a constant source of support, helping her brush up on computer skills and navigate academic assignments. Dinah believes firmly that education is the key to achieving one’s dreams.

Her passion for working with people stems from her experience caring for her late son, who had cerebral palsy. This experience instilled in her immense patience. After his passing at 19 years, Dinah began volunteering at a centre for individuals with mental and physical challenges.

Her dedication extends beyond her academic pursuits. With a daughter and another son, she balances her family life with a strong commitment to the community. In 2017, she was named Worker of the Quarter. She actively participates in the City’s initiatives, volunteering as chairperson of the women’s forum in 2022 and serving as the deputy person for employment equity in Community Development. Additionally, she attends regular Wikipedian workshops.

Dinah’s goal is to become a librarian in the City and to also pursue an Honours degree. Her message to everyone is clear: “You’re never too old to learn or achieve your goals. We all face setbacks, but it’s only when you give up that you truly fail.”

Dinah Billings is a shining example of lifelong learning and a true asset to the City of Johannesburg.
