Contra.joburg 2025 Transforms the Inner City Into a Live Canvas

Johannesburg’s inner city continues to evolve as a hub of creativity and cultural exchange and Contra.Joburg is at the heart of that transformation. This August, the City will once again play host to Johannesburg’s most radical visual arts festival under the provocative theme: “What if art interrupts you?” From 30–31 August 2025, the festival promises a dynamic collision of artistic interventions, unscripted performances, and immersive installations that reimagine the possibilities of visual art in the urban landscape.

More than 170 visual artists, designers, and makers will activate unconventional spaces across the CBD, from rooftops and alleyways to galleries and long-forgotten buildings, turning the inner city into a living, breathing canvas.

Founder Sara Hallatt explains: “Every artist, every location, and every moment is chosen for its ability to surprise you, to feel like it could only happen here and now. We want audiences to feel like they stumbled into something… maybe by accident, maybe by fate.”

Audiences can expect sonic disruptions, live glitches, and collaborative installations that defy categorisation. True to its ethos, Contra.Joburg challenges the way art is seen, heard, and experienced, while making contemporary African creativity accessible to broader audiences.

As Johannesburg continues to support and celebrate organisations that contribute meaningfully to the city’s cultural and economic vitality, Contra.Joburg stands out as a shining example of how the arts can inspire renewal and inclusivity in the inner city.
