Commuters have less than 10 days to help shape the future of Johannesburg’s Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system by taking part in an operational assessment survey before the 30 July 2025 deadline. The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), on behalf of the City of Johannesburg Transport Department, has launched the assessment of the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, focusing on the Phase 1A and 1B trunk routes.
This initiative forms part of the City’s broader efforts to improve system performance, service quality, and financial sustainability for the thousands of commuters who rely on the Rea Vaya network daily.
Since its launch in 2009, Rea Vaya has played a key role in transforming Joburg’s public transport landscape. Phase 1A introduced the first full BRT corridor, linking Thokoza Park in Soweto to Ellis Park in Doornfontein. Phase 1B later extended services to Westbury, Auckland Park, Parktown, and the inner city. As the network expands, the City is prioritising a review of earlier phases to ensure the BRT system continues to meet the needs of its growing commuter base.
Residents, commuters, and other stakeholders are urged to complete a short survey to share their experiences, highlight challenges, and suggest improvements.
“Feedback from the surveys will guide how we improve system reliability and efficiency,” said Themba Mathibe, CEO of the JDA. “This assessment allows us to listen, learn, and build a better BRT system together.”
Public input will be crucial in ensuring Rea Vaya remains fast, safe, accessible, and responsive to Johannesburg’s changing transport needs.
