Kicking off the Youth Day celebrations with a community-driven initiative, the Sports and Recreation department will host the Jeep Soweto Tour and Charity Event on June 16 and 17.

This meaningful undertaking will revitalise Thabisile Lower Primary School in Soweto, Diepkloof, as a symbol of giving back to the community.

On June 16th, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Emndeni Library, situated at Sondela St., Emdeni, South Soweto, will host the June 16 Youth Annual Dialogue, themed “Now and Then.”

This empowering event will provide both youth and adults with a platform to share their experiences and reflect on the past while embracing the present.

Joburg Theatres is set to captivate young theatre enthusiasts with thought-provoking productions that pay homage to Youth Day.

Among them, “Emsini,” written by Moagi Modise, offers a captivating perspective on the generational shift in consciousness between the heroes of the Mandela era and the youth of the next generation.

The show will grace the stages of the Joburg Theatre from Thursday, 15 June to Sunday, 18 June.

On Saturday, 17 June, the Sports and Recreation department will host its regional #CyaZeeVocaVoca healthy lifestyle campaign at Eldorado Park Stadium, Region G, between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.

This event aims to promote a healthy lifestyle among the communities of Johannesburg, fostering a culture of well-being.

In a noble outreach initiative, the Hector Pieterson Museum will visit six special schools for children living with disabilities from Monday, 19 June to Friday, 23 June.

This programme ensures all young people have the opportunity to learn about the remarkable impact made by their counterparts in June 1976, further emphasising the significance of cultural heritage in today’s democratic South Africa.

Laura Vercueil, the Public Relations and Communications Manager for Joburg Tourism, acknowledges Joburg’s remarkable historical heritage, emphasising the importance of celebrating the tragedy of June 16, 1976, as a pivotal moment on the path to democracy.

Vercueil says the array of Youth Day events and the meaningful tributes paid to its significance contribute to the vibrant tapestry of Joburg’s heritage and cultural landscape.

Adding to the commemorative events of Youth Day, Jozi FM will host a captivating lifestyle and entertainment day event, providing young entrepreneurs with a platform to showcase their products in fashion, food, lifestyle, and the arts.

This event also seeks to address the financial challenges faced by today’s generation.
