City’s School Holiday Sports and Recreation Programme Ends on a High Note

Through its Community Development department, the City of Johannesburg runs its holiday programme as one of its key initiatives. Aligned with school breaks, the programme attracts school-going children who gather at various sports and recreation facilities across the city.

Centre officials, alongside relevant stakeholders, guide them through a range of planned activities during the holidays. Participants receive snacks and meals, courtesy of sponsors.

On Day 4 (Friday, 4 April 2025), Community Development MMC Tebogo Nkokou visited the South Rand Recreation Centre, taking part in the activities and emphasising the importance of sports development and recreation.

Despite the rain and chill, learners from surrounding areas—including Kenilworth High School, Crestview Primary School, and other local institutions—enthusiastically participated in their favourite sports. Aged between 10 and 16, they expressed excitement as they enjoyed a safe, clean environment with full amenities. The programme featured netball, football, scotch, and other sporting activities for the children.

MMC Nkokou, accompanied by officials from the Sports and Recreation office, said: “It’s wonderful to see all these young children at the centre, safe and engaged under the guidance of community leaders who are making their school holidays enjoyable. I encourage you to keep coming and taking part in these activities.

“The City of Johannesburg established these school holiday programmes especially for you because we care about your wellbeing. They also give your parents peace of mind, knowing where you are and what you’re doing. We are committed to supporting our future leaders, and you have our full backing.”

Thabo Nkwadi, the programme’s operations manager, saud it extends beyond sports—offering guidance, counselling, life skills, and mentorship. “This initiative complements school activities but takes place during holidays, outside the classroom,” he said.

Bongani Mawela, a University of Johannesburg Sports Management Master’s student, attended as part of his studies. “Participating in these events enriches my learning,” he said.

The MMC’s next stop was a similar event at Brixton Recreational Centre, where he commended Councillor Alex Christians for his dedication to youth engagement through basketball. He highlighted how sport unites communities, promotes physical and mental wellbeing, nurtures talent, and keeps young people safe.
