Buckle up Johannesburg! Get ready to cheer for the unstoppable force that is Phindile Makhanye, a 26-year-old dynamo who’s making waves on the global stage! From the sandy shores of KwaZulu-Natal to the sparkling pools of Rabie Ridge Swimming Pool, this fierce lifeguard turned artistic swimming sensation has captivated hearts and minds alike. Makhanye dove headfirst into the world of artistic swimming in 2010. Fast forward 14 years, and she is not just representing Johannesburg but commanding attention on the international scene, from Australia to Budapest and most recently, the dazzling stage of the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar.
But Makhanye’s journey isn’t just about medals and accolades.
As a lifeguard and mentor, she’s on a mission to ensure that every ripple she makes in the pool creates a tidal wave of opportunity for others.
With every stroke, she’s paving the way for aspiring swimmers in our community, showing them that with dedication and determination, anything is possible.
“Stepping into the world of artistic swimming has been a whirlwind adventure — one filled with triumphs, challenges, and countless moments of inspiration. But above all, it’s been an opportunity for me to inspire others to chase their dreams, no matter how big or daunting they may seem,” says Makhanye.
The City of Johannesburg proudly stands behind Makhanye, celebrating her as not just an athlete, but a beacon of hope and possibility for our community.
Mandla Mahlangu, the Assistant Director of Sport and Recreation in Region A, aptly puts it: “Phindile’s journey embodies the spirit of excellence and resilience that we strive to foster within our city. Her commitment to training and mentorship is a testament to the bright future of aquatic sports in Johannesburg.”
