City ramps-up service delivery improvements in 120 days pledge

The City has earmarked the next 120 days for ramping up the efficiency of service delivery across the metro, in a bid to improve the general quality of life in Johannesburg.
The multidisciplinary approach to effective service delivery focuses on the needs of communities rather than what’s been prescribed. It also focuses a basket of all municipal service improvements in one area over a sustained period, to enhance its liveability.
The Executive Mayor, Cllr Geoff Makhubo, who launched the citywide programme officially in Ivory Park this week says it aims to improve the quality of delivery of basic services in mostly underdeveloped areas.
Cllr Makhubo says this pledge will set a new benchmark for the delivery of basic services in Johannesburg.
“This community is happy with us because all they see is their area being improved; the urban lived environment is being improved,” says the Mayor.
In the next four months, Cllr Makhubo and his team of executives and senior municipal administrators will travel to all Regions across the City, particularly the most deprived, in an attempt to bridge service delivery gaps and remedy the subsequent backlog.
“We want every resident of Johannesburg to feel like they live in a World-Class African City,” says Makhubo.
The MMC for Transport, Cllr Nonhlanhla Makhuba says the quality of roads in Ivory Park will be prioritised for major improvements.
“There is a patch of road which we are busy fixing. We will also install a stormwater drain to avoid flooding and the erosion of the surface of the road,” says Makhuba.
She’s decried the theft of public infrastructure as the main cause of the blocked sewer network, calling on law enforcement to act tougher against perpetrators.
A visibly delighted resident told Mayor Makhubo the community was happy to have the City improve services.
“We hope that all our wishes will be taken into consideration.”
The 120 Days of Accelerated Service Delivery programme has no assigned budget, however, money has been drawn from the service maintenance kitty of all departments and entities.
