Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) is delighted to announce our dedication to spotlighting the significance of World Parks Week, observed annually from 28th April 2024 to 5th May 2024. This year, our focus is on highlighting parks as crucial elements in enhancing community well-being, promoting health, and supporting diverse ecosystems, providing natural outdoor havens for residents of Joburg.
In recent weeks, JCPZ has unveiled three new parks: Moema Park and Lufhereng Park in Region D, and Florida (Lake) Park in Region C. These green areas offer essential retreats for urban dwellers, enabling them to reconnect with nature, engage in physical activity, and unwind in tranquil and inviting surroundings.
Parks play a pivotal role in fostering a healthy, vibrant community. They offer myriad benefits, including boosting mental health, alleviating stress, and facilitating social interaction. Additionally, urban parks contribute to biodiversity preservation, air quality enhancement, and climate change mitigation.
Recognising the vital role these parks play in supporting community health and wellness, JCPZ aims to develop spaces that promote physical activity, mental well-being, and overall quality of life.
Moreover, JCPZ underscores the connectivity aspect of these parks, serving as links between different neighbourhoods, providing residents with safe and accessible pathways to traverse the city. By enhancing connectivity, these parks cultivate a sense of community and belonging among residents, ultimately strengthening the social fabric of the community.
JCPZ is committed to creating parks that serve not only as recreational spaces but also as essential contributors to urban development and economic empowerment. Park users are encouraged to take ownership of their parks by adhering to by-laws, maintaining cleanliness after use, and participating in regular voluntary clean-up activities.
Join us in commemorating World Parks Week 2024. Together, we can cultivate sustainable urban environments for all.
