City of Johannesburg Triumphs at the 2024 or Tambo Soncini Games

The City of Johannesburg took first place at the 2024 OR Tambo Soncini Games, held on 26 and 27 October at the University of Johannesburg, Brixton Multipurpose Centre, and Linden Swimming Pool. Team Johannesburg successfully defended its title, placing Ekurhuleni in second and the City of Tshwane in third.

The games celebrated the resilience and spirit of young athletes from Johannesburg, who lifted the trophy in tribute to OR Tambo and his comrades. These leaders sacrificed much, with many forced into exile during the struggle against apartheid.

While abroad, Tambo forged a strong connection with Reggio Emilia, Italy, particularly with Giuseppe Soncini. Their friendship led to Reggio Emilia granting honorary citizenship to anti-apartheid icons Albertina Sisulu and Albert Luthuli in 1987. Upholding Tambo’s vision, the Gauteng Provincial Government continues to champion education and social cohesion through initiatives such as the Games.

This year’s Games honoured OR Tambo’s legacy, celebrating his sacrifices and his lasting friendship with Reggio Emilia. As an honorary guest at the opening ceremony, Noluthando Tambo, daughter of OR Tambo, expressed her gratitude: “My father had a vision. Seeing it realised is a profound honour for our family. These games continue his legacy of friendship, unity, and a commitment to building a cohesive, inclusive society.”

The atmosphere throughout the Games was one of excitement and unity, as young athletes, both able-bodied and differently-abled, competed with enthusiasm. The 2024 Games set a high standard, with upgraded facilities and an electric atmosphere.

Sizwe Hlamu, captain of Team Johannesburg’s football team from Mofolo South, showcased outstanding skill and leadership, leading his team to a gold medal. Reflecting on the victory, he shared, “It’s an honour to captain a winning team. My teammates played with respect, and despite pressure from other teams, we gave our best and came out on top. I’m grateful for this opportunity.”

Hlamu described the role of captain as challenging yet rewarding, adding, “There’s an expectation to work harder and keep the team motivated, and I’m glad I could do that.” His passion for football is evident, as he aspires to continue developing his skills in the sport.

The bond between South African and Italian participants was palpable, with players and coaches exchanging jerseys, contact information, and even making plans for future camps — a testament to the enduring connection symbolised by OR Tambo and Giuseppe Soncini.
