City of Johannesburg Marks International Tea Day With Senior Citizen Wellness Event

Senior citizens from Ward 54 were treated to a heartwarming celebration at the Crown Gardens Recreation Centre on Tuesday, 21 May 2025, in honour of International Tea Day.

The event was organised by the City of Johannesburg’s Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (CRUM) Region F, in partnership with the Social Development and Sport and Recreation departments.

International Tea Day, recognised globally on 21 May, was first proposed in 2005 and officially adopted by the United Nations in 2019. It celebrates the cultural, historical and economic significance of tea across the world. This year’s theme, “Tea for Better Lives”, spotlights tea’s role in supporting livelihoods, sustainability, and health.

The celebration catered for 120 elderly residents from three local retirement homes—Anni Burger, Carrick Place, and Xavier Street Old Age Village—based in Ward 54, Crown Gardens. The attendees were joined by Ward Councillor Stuart Marais, who played a pivotal role in making the event possible.

The goal of the celebration was to honour Johannesburg’s older residents, reminding them that they remain valued pillars of the community whose wisdom and contributions continue to shape society. The event featured a delightful mix of relaxation and entertainment. Seniors enjoyed a variety of aromatic teas and were pampered with health screenings, podiatry and chiropractic care, massages, social services, games, and live entertainment.

Such initiatives have consistently brought joy and connection to the lives of senior citizens in the city. Events like these reflect the community’s commitment to ensuring the well-being, dignity, and happiness of the elderly during their golden years. The spirit of giving shone through, with local businesses and community stakeholders donating goody bags, cakes, biscuits, muffins, and other delicious treats.

“This is the fourth event of its kind we have hosted,” said Irene Mafune, Regional Director for Citizen Relationship and Urban Management Region F. “Our senior citizens play a vital role in our communities and deserve our utmost respect. It is not only our duty but a constitutional obligation to care for them.”

“I also need to mention that this was a zero-budget event. The City didn’t spend a cent except by providing a venue and personnel. This beautiful occasion could not be possible without our generous sponsors: UJ Chiropractic Unit; UJ Podiatric Unit: UJ Law Clinic; Spar Ormonde; Spar Ridgeway; Pick n Pay, The Glen Mall; Sasol, Swartgoud; Lee’s Beauty Clinic; SAPS; Clicks The Glen; Clicks Brixton; Supporting Those In Need Together; and Susu Bubble Tea Cyrildene. They collectively made our senior citizens feel like the queens and kings that they really are,” said Mafune.

Sibongile Mjangqeka, a 70-year-old member of Age-in-Action, an NPO that advocates for the rights and well-being of older persons, encouraged her peers to stay engaged and positive.

“We are not ready to die. We must live fully, stay active, and appreciate what we have. Many people our age suffer from stress and depression, but by staying involved in activities like sewing or knitting, we can improve our well-being,” she shared.

Grandmother of six Lily Mafata thanked the organisers for the sumptuous treats. “There were so many cakes, I took some home as padkos. Not only were we fed, but we also gained knowledge as UJ law students advised us on how to draft wills. Though it was a cold, it was a day well spent.”

Meshack Maluleke, Regional Manager for Social Development in Region F, echoed this sentiment by reinforcing the city’s commitment to building a caring society.

“You, our senior citizens, are the foundation of our households and our communities. You are reservoirs of wisdom and deserve respect and support. Today is all about you. We want you to forget your worries and enjoy this moment. Our elderly must enjoy their golden years with health, dignity, and a deep sense of belonging.”
