City of Johannesburg Lights up Ellis Park for Netball Championships

The City of Johannesburg, led by Executive Mayor Dada Morero, joined hands with Netball South Africa to officially open the SPAR Netball Championships at the Ellis Park Arena on December 2, 2024.

The event, which promises to be a thrilling spectacle, was graced by the presence of prominent figures, including MMC for Community Development Cllr Tebogo Nkonkou and SPAR executives.

Addressing more than 2 500 netball players, Mayor Morero highlighted the significance of the championship, emphasizing that it is more than just a sporting event. “This is a movement to ignite dreams and break barriers,” he said. “Through netball, we are creating role models for our youth and providing opportunities for communities to shine.”

The mayor further underscored the economic benefits of hosting such a prestigious event. “By bringing this championship to Johannesburg, we are revitalising our inner city and positioning the City as a global sports and cultural hub.”

The event also served as a poignant reminder of the ongoing fight against HIV/Aids and gender-based violence. A candlelight ceremony was held to commemorate those affected by these issues, demonstrating the power of sport to address social challenges.

As the seven-day championship unfolds, Ellis Park Arena is expected to be filled with excitement and energy. The City of Johannesburg is committed to making this event an unforgettable experience for players, fans, and the entire nation.

“Let’s make this a championship to remember,” Mayor Morero urged. “Johannesburg is ready. The arena is ready. The players are ready.
