City of Joburg Upgrades Public Toilets to Improve Safety and Dignity

As part of the Joburg Property Company’s ongoing effort to upgrade public toilets across the City of Johannesburg, a team was recently dispatched to the Booysens facility to assess the progress.

“This facility, which had suffered extensive structural vandalism, has now undergone significant repairs to restore it to a safe and functional condition,” said Project Administrator Thulile Hlophe.

The upgrades include:

  • A new roof and ceiling
  • New plumbing and sanitation fittings
  • Rewired electricity and better lighting
  • New wall and floor tiles
  • Better security to prevent vandalism

Similar work is also happening in Braamfontein and Jeppestown, and those upgrades are nearly finished. These projects are part of the City’s commitment to providing public toilets that are clean, safe, and respectful for everyone.

Public toilets are crucial for our communities. When they are rundown, they can be a health and safety risk. That is why getting them sorted is a priority.

“We are pleased with the progress made so far and look forward to the handover of the refurbished facilities, marking a tangible improvement in service delivery and community care.

“Through this programme, Johannesburg continues to demonstrate its dedication to maintaining public infrastructure that is clean, functional, and secure, ensuring that all residents and visitors can access safe and dignified facilities across the city,” said Hlophe.
