City of Champions: Johannesburg Celebrates Rising Stars

The Ellis Park Sports Precinct recently buzzed with excitement as the City of Johannesburg celebrated its young sporting heroes who won gold medals at the 2024 OR Tambo Soncini Games.

The event was a testament to Johannesburg’s commitment to nurturing young talent. Athletes from various sporting codes, in their Team Joburg uniforms, filled the air with pride and joy. Parents, coaches, and city officials beamed with satisfaction, recognising the potential of these young stars.

One such star was 16-year-old netball sensation Yanga Shongwe from Freedom Park. “I started playing netball at the age of six. I have improved significantly, and my dream is to one day represent South Africa as a Protea, just like Kamogelo Maseko.”

Shongwe’s journey to victory was marked by hard work and determination. “It wasn’t easy reaching the finals,” she recalled. “We pushed hard and won. I believe that with continued focus, my dream of playing for the Proteas is achievable.”

The celebration was filled with inspiring stories of athletes who had overcome challenges to achieve their goals. From football to athletics, every sport was represented, showcasing the depth of talent within the city.

A special awards ceremony was held to honour the first-place winners. Each athlete received a certificate of excellence and a custom medal, a symbol of their hard work and dedication.

Tiyani Baloyi, the acting Assistant Director of Sport and Recreation in the City of Johannesburg, emphasized the significance of the occasion. “Today, we celebrate not just medals, but the future of South African sports. These athletes have proven that with hard work, discipline, and consistency, success is within reach.”

Baloyi extended his gratitude to the Local Organising Committee, Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Johannesburg Sport Federation, and other stakeholders for their invaluable contribution.
