City joins globe to observe World Social Work Day

World Social Work Day, observed on March 19, highlights the essential role of social workers worldwide. In the City of Johannesburg, the Department of Social Development serves as the custodian of social work services, employing 116 social workers and 14 social auxiliary workers dedicated to direct services. These dedicated professionals play a crucial role in supporting vulnerable individuals and families, facilitating indigent burials, assessing food insecurity, conducting home visits for bedridden clients, providing disaster management support, and delivering integrated social work services including substance abuse demand reduction and harm reduction services.

Additionally, they manage the City’s crisis line, serving as a lifeline for those in need.

Despite their vital contributions, City social workers face various challenges including staff shortages and safety concerns during home visits.

The emotional toll of their work can also strain their personal lives, making it challenging to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Recognising these challenges, the City’s MMC for Health and Social, Cllr Ennie Makhafola, recently hosted an imbizo to address key issues faced by social workers.

She committed to hiring four new social workers in the current financial term.

“As a healthcare professional myself, I am deeply aware of the obstacles confronting our healthcare system,” said MMC Makhafola.

“I am dedicated to finding solutions to the challenges within the health and social sector, including improving safety, working conditions, and addressing salary disparities.”
