City Celebrates Phuti Lekoloane’s Volunteer of the Year Triumph

The City of Johannesburg’s Sports and Recreation Department, under the Community Development directorate, continues to stand firmly behind initiatives that promote inclusion and diversity. Its ongoing support of the African Pride Games is part of the City’s broader commitment to raising awareness for the LGBTQI+ community through sport. This spirit of inclusion shone brightly when Phuti Lekoloane, founder of the Phuti Lekoloane Foundation, was honoured with the prestigious Volunteer of the Year Award at the South African Sports Awards.

Lekoloane’s journey is one of selfless service and unwavering dedication to uplifting communities. He has invested his time, resources, and passion into creating opportunities for others, particularly young athletes from marginalised backgrounds. Through platforms such as the African Pride Games, he continues to champion grassroots development, transformation, and inclusivity in sport.

“This award celebrates the power of volunteerism in changing lives and shaping a more inclusive sporting landscape in South Africa,” said Lekoloane. “It reminds us that the greatest victories happen off the field, when we give of ourselves to uplift others. This moment is dedicated to every volunteer who believes in the transformative power of sport.”

Community Development MMC, Cllr Tebogo Nkokou, congratulated Lekoloane and commended the organisers of the awards. “Today we honour the LGBTQI+ community for their resilience and determination to be recognised in all sectors of society. As the City of Johannesburg, we commit to supporting them as they showcase their talent and abilities, particularly in sport. We are exceptionally proud of this achievement.”
