City Celebrates Health Heroes for Long Service

The City of Johannesburg’s Health Department honoured nearly 350 long-serving employees at a glittering ceremony held at the Brixton Recreation Centre on 28 February 2025.

The event, initiated by Executive Director Dr Gadirobe Mothibi, aimed to boost staff morale by recognising and appreciating employees who have dedicated years of service to the City.

“The Health Long Service Awards are very close to my heart. They celebrate and recognise the unwavering dedication, selflessness, and resilience of the men and women who form the backbone of our healthcare system. Healthcare workers are the unsung heroes of the City,” said Dr Mothibi.

Despite budget constraints, the organising committee brought the celebration to life with support from corporate sponsors, including Liberty, FNB, and Clinix, who contributed goodie bags and food. Attendees were treated to a performance by the Phoenix College Choir, which delivered a stirring rendition of the South African national anthem, and the Phoenix College marimba band, which kicked off the festivities with upbeat melodies.

The awards celebrated employees across four categories based on their years of service:

  • 18 to 23 years of service
  • 24 to 29 years of service
  • 30 to 39 years of service
  • 40 years and above

“The heart and soul of the City’s Health Department are its long-serving employees who hold invaluable knowledge and experience,” said Hlubikazi Ntamehlo, Director of Public Health. “These awards reinforce that our employees are valued and that their contributions matter.”

Through the Long Service Awards, the City is fostering a culture of appreciation, ensuring that employees feel recognised for their hard work and commitment. The event not only celebrated the dedication of the City’s healthcare workers but also highlighted their critical role in maintaining and improving public health services.
