Choirs light up Joburg Theatre with graceful singing

“Music in its many genres has always been part of our heritage as residents of the City of Joburg; it has become an inseparable part of who we are as individuals and as communities.”

That is how the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Ronald Harris, officially opened the 5th Annual Choral Music Festival at Joburg Theatre on Sunday, 22 May 2022.

Choral enthusiasts came in their numbers at the Joburg Theatre to watch choirs from all over Johannesburg perform various renditions of well-known African songs.

“Today we are gathered for the 5th Annual Choral Music Festival, one of the City’s flagship programmes aimed at stimulating and promoting choral music development in the City,” said Cllr Harris.

He admitted that he’s a fan of music and appreciates choral melodies. “Choral music is one of the cultural expressions and vehicles that brings people together, both within cultures and across cultural boundaries.”

The festival is a testament to the City of Johannesburg’s commitment to investing in the development of underserved genres within the creative industry. The programme has had an impact on the lives of many artists in the City, and it has undoubtedly revitalised the creative spirit of the fraternity.

Participants looked stunning in colourful African prints and attires, all in cheerful moods, patiently waiting for their turn to perform while rehearsing their respective songs.

“The City of Johannesburg urges all of you to continue supporting the arts and ensuring that artists are able to monetise their content. It is ultimately you as audiences and consumers of creative content who make these sustainable,” said programme director Kutlwano Masote.

“Finally, I’d like to thank the choral music practitioners who continue to work tirelessly against all odds to ensure the success of this programme; I thank you all and wish you the best in your respective endeavours,” Masote concluded.
